A country club based around a racetrack instead of a golf course. Track boosters call this another concept ahead of its time from Meadowdale management. Several successful track-based country clubs are operating now, including Autobahn Country Club in nearby Joliet. Detractors say it was just another scheme to attract some badly needed operating cash.
The club plan, launched in 1967, was grand, but it never got a chance to deliver on its concept. The separate club house with its restaurant, lounge, pool, showers, and so forth, never was built.
The temporary club facility was underwhelming- some new carpet, tables and chairs, and window air conditioners on the second floor of the old tower. A few people bought into the concept, but not enough to make a difference. The Grand Prix 500 Club died with the track in 1969.
A friend was a member. He felt he got his money's worth just for all the laps he got blasting his GT-350 around the track, first in one direction, then in the other. MIR backwards? Think about it. That's a scary thought! RF
